  • Back on the streets of the city where I was born.

    Liverpool.

Tonic for a weary soul :-)

  • Two years ago the buskers of Liverpool were involved in a legal challenge against the city council who had just brought in a stringent licensing scheme that would have spelt the end of the city's vibrant busking scene.

Today we sat around the table in the offices of Liverpool BID putting the finishing touches on new guidance designed to help street culture flourish in this most wonderful of cities.

It is to the immense credit of the local authority that they backed down when they realised that they had got things wrong. We have spent 6 months of regular meetings with buskers, the Musician's Union, the BID and the council to work out a policy that works for all of us.

Hopefully the guidance we have worked out together here could be used by other places where busking issues arise. A certain Camden Council comes to mind!

There will be music on the streets of Liverpool...

All you need is love :-)

Just finished a meeting of the Musician's Union Regional Committee in York. This is the meeting after the meeting!

I can't speak highly enough of this union. They have supported the right of musicians to perform in public spaces across the country and they are doing their bit to Keep Music Live.

If you are a musician/busker and you play regularly you should consider joining the union. You get £2000 insurance for instruments and £1000000 public liability insurance included too...

Don't be deceived by the press in this country. Trade Unions play an invaluable role supporting working people and fighting for justice.

    Now, where's my pint?

    Keep Streets Live!

The Powers That Be?

A typical damp Wednesday busking in York. That’s me, Jonny Walker, looking a bit upset on the left. On the right, partially obscured, are no less than SIX public servants from the council and the police who are taking time out of their afternoon to deal with that social menace otherwise known as busking.York Council

Song Lyrics: This Is Not Me

This Is Not Me Walker/Wing Verse 1 Why do bad things happen? Too many crosses to bear. Why does God stay silent? Is it ‘cos he’s not there? Chorus So many times I have begged for forgiveness, So many times I’ve been down on my knees, So many times I have waited in silence for

Song Lyrics: Song For Bernie

Song For Bernie Walker/Kipper There’s an empty space on Church Street, where Bernie used to dance, With passing drunks and travelers, She never missed the chance, To move her beaten body, broken, badly with the beat, To briefly find herself at one with the music of the street, There’s an empty place on Church Street

Song Lyrics: Beautiful Morning

Beautiful Morning Walker Beautiful Morning, you’ve come my way, Beautiful Morning, don’t go away, Beautiful Morning you’ve come my way, Beautiful Morning, don’t go away, I was hiding, I wasn’t seeking, But you found me just the same, You answered questions I wasn’t asking, And you seemed to know my name. Song Lyrics: Strange Disease

Strange Disease Walker Upon the good ship nowhere, The slaves awoke one morn, The salty smell of seaweed, Filled the dew-kissed air of dawn, There was a sudden murmur, As some could see the land, And in the far horizon, The sun reflected off the sand, Chorus Ride this boat with me, We’ll sail these

Song Lyrics: Last Waltz Of The Summer

Last Waltz Of The Summer A Walker/Wing song It’s late as my head hits the pillow, And my weary eyes close for the night, But I’ve no time to lay here and wallow, For I’ve seen the most gruesome of sights, And I’ve listened to the whispers of children, Whilst they’re hiding out under their

Keep Streets Live and Media Coverage

This is an extract from a letter I have written to media contacts: BBC Northwest ran a story on our event, but I have to say that the coverage was slightly mis-leading and misrepresented our grievances. Anybody watching the report on Monday 9th would have been forgiven for thinking it was a bunch of buskers
